Who came first, the chicken or the egg? I remember a paper I
submitted to my translation and interpretation students about
the genesis of translation and interpretation. Today, I find that
the roots of either linguistic technique is not so relevant. I have
come to the realization that both aspects of the exercise are
equally important. We convey meaning means we translate,
whether it is in written or verbal form. Likewise, we provide
meaning to meaning — in other words, we interpret — and this
mental process occurs while writing or speaking the context
received from another language. Therefore, I urge colleagues
and readers to refrain from upholding one form as superior or
inferior to the other since they both occur simultaneously, even
if we may not be aware that both processes are actually taking
place.

There is a natural impulse that motivates people to associate. The social bond we pursue is motivated by personal interest. There is a need we wish to fill. Beyond the need there are wants we seek to satisfy. To fulfill our needs and wants we communicate with our environment. As part of that environment we communicate with each other. In order to communicate clearly, we strive to use the same language as our interlocutors. The less noise there is in our mutual communication, the better our understanding of each other’s meaning. Here is where TI comes in: The combined service of translation and interpretation.
The role of translation and interpretation occurs on both the personal and interpersonal levels. We suggest that every individual interprets and translates her/his surroundings and the impulses received upon which she acts. The individual bases her actions on the conscious and subconscious evaluation and response of said stimuli. Only on matters of language have individuals other than self responded to assist in completing the process of interpretation and translation of words, sounds, intonation, syntax and meaning produced by somebody else who uses a different code: a different language.
The role of translators and interpreters, TIers, is bound to change to encompass other encoded meaning than official languages. It will include disciplines like medicine, law, psychology, sociology, economics etc., as well as the arts and sciences, and it will eventually separate from them as an independent activity from them just as it has done pertaining to language.
Translation and interpretation, TI, will not replace the practitioners of the other applied disciplines or professions. Just like it has done with language, it will complement them. It will not provide legal advice, but will contribute with pertinent information and evaluation of non-legal nature. It will not prescribe medication, nor establish a prognosis, but will furnish additional relevant elements about the history of the patient. In the latter two examples, the TIer will assist each discipline and the greater environment in doing one thing: Understanding.
So the function of TI is to assist the greater environment in understanding the specificities of the lesser environments. TI is therefore vested in bringing out the truth about impulses, relationthips and the sources that trigger them as well as the targets that receive them. Therefore, translation and interpretation is an interdisciplinary function and not only a function that strictly stems from applied linguistics. It continues to apply linguistics, but it will help apply knowledge as well.
I invite you to consider our services in light of the greater picture here described. Your appreciation of our skills will add value to your particular business objectives.
